1. 1909

   Born in Lemberg

   Born on 13 April 1909 in Lemberg (Polish Lwów), in Austrian Galicia.

2. 1927

   Enters the Polytechnic

   Starts electrical engineering at the Lwów Polytechnic and takes Kuratowski's set theory course.

3. 1929

   First papers

   His first two papers solve problems Kuratowski had posed in lectures.

4. 1930

   Improves a result of Banach

   Proves a 1929 measure theory result of Banach without the Generalised Continuum Hypothesis.

5. 1933

   Doctorate

   Doctoral thesis at the Lwów Polytechnic, under Kuratowski.

6. 1935

   Invitation to Princeton

   John von Neumann invites him to the Institute for Advanced Study.
