1.1 Lwów on the map

Interactive 4 min

This is where the journey starts. The inset shows three places in the centre of the city: the university, the Polytechnic and the building of the Scottish Café at 27 Shevchenko Avenue. No historical borders are drawn.

Try this. Find the three labelled places in the inset. The plan is schematic: it keeps their order from west to east, not their distances.

  1. Lwów

The journey starts in Lwów, then in Poland and today Lviv in Ukraine. Stanisław Ulam was born there on 13 April 1909. He entered the Lwów Polytechnic in 1927, took his doctorate there in 1933 under Kazimierz Kuratowski, and came back to the city for the summers of 1936 to 1939. The inset is a schematic plan of the centre: the university, the Polytechnic and the building of the Scottish Café at 27 Shevchenko Avenue. The map shows present-day borders only; no historical borders are drawn. Sources: MacTutor; IEEE Computer Society; Mathematics Genealogy Project.
